Overhead line equipment (OLE) trainer wins a national award for his efforts during a rail incident

The Network Rail Leadership Conference saw the company's leaders celebrate how colleagues from across the business have put passengers first.  At the conference, 300 of Network Rail's leaders gathered to focus on passengers, safety and customer service.

The event included awards to recognise great examples of teams using Network Rail's values of safe, care, teamwork and empowerment to put passengers first.

The winners for each category were chosen live by popular vote at the conference.

The winners: Empowerment

The winning entry for the empowerment value was put forward by Mark Tarry, business services director, Route Services, who shared the story of Dan Green - an overhead line equipment (OLE) trainer - who removed himself from the training centre and reported to the delivery unit to support his colleagues during an overhead line de-wirement on the East Coast Main Line (ECML).

Dan joined the maintenance teams for the shift and provided valuable support, enabling the railway to reopen more quickly. As a result, teams in the area have agreed to stand down all skills trainers with competencies to assist tasks when required.
